February AGM postponed; March will go ahead

Hello everyone,
We held a virtual board meeting last night and regretfully we again have to cancel the next Monday general members’ meeting which was due to be held on February 7th.

Our next Monday general members meeting will be March 7th. It’s scheduled to take place at the usual place, Burnside Lawn Bowling Club, 274 Hampton Rd, Victoria, BC V8Z 1H1 at 7pm.

If the current covid restrictions are still in place we WILL go ahead with that meeting in person, even if we have to hold it outdoors somewhere. This is the general members’ meeting just before the March show and we have a lot to discuss.   So the format for the meeting will be to elect / ratify the board members for 2022 and then moving on to discuss the show organization and volunteers needed.  We’re hoping for a great turn out.

January 2022 AGM postponed

Hello everyone,

With the latest announcement by Dr. Bonnie Henry it is with regret that we will have to postpone our Annual General Meeting which was due to be held on January 10th, 2022 at the Lawn Bowling club.

Our next scheduled general meeting after January is February 7th, 2022 at the Lawn Bowling club.  Unless we are forced to cancel it, we will move the AGM to this date.

We were very much hoping to nominate some new members to the board. Any member may put themselves forward for election for a board position.  Below is the current state of the board, elected and appointed, and who is occupying each position.  As you will see, many people are wearing 2 hats, and would gladly hand over one of their positions to someone new.  In particular member-at-large and island zone rep are good to get an all-round feel for how things run, but if you have interest or skills in any area, please consider putting yourself forward.
If you would like to know more about a position and how much time / work is involved, please email the current holder directly and ask them.

Elected positions are

It’s time to renew your membership!

It is a curiosity that membership of the Victoria Lapidary and Mineral Society (VLMS) runs from January 1st to December 31st of the year, no matter which date you originally joined the club. As a result of this everyone’s membership is due for renewal.

I would like to send all the membership information to the BCLS in the 1st week of January, so please take the opportunity of renewing as soon as you can.

You can renew your membership by one of the following:

1. filling out this google form 2022 Victoria Lapidary and Mineral Society Membership Application

2. filling out a paper form at the Christmas Dinner

3. by printing this pdf 2022-VLMS-membership-Application-form.pdf and mailing it and a cheque to: VLMS Membership Secretary, 4711 Kasani PlaceVictoria, V9C 4C7

If you joined the club this year as a new member and paid fees for this year, those fees will be applied to next year’s membership and you do not need to pay again, however you do need to fill in the form for 2022 to indicate you wish to continue with the membership. This is a one-time special circumstance due to the Covid situation.

Payment can be made by one of the following:

1. e-transfer to treasurer@vlms.ca – use a security question where the answer is “membership” such as “what is this for?”

2. by cheque sent by mail or in person at the Christmas dinner

3. by cash in person at the Christmas dinner

Your membership fee to the Victoria Lapidary and Mineral Society (VLMS) includes a membership of the British Columbia Lapidary Society (BCLS), which in turn is a member of the Gem and Mineral Federation of Canada (the “GMFC” and the Outdoor Recreation Council (the “ORC”). As a member you are welcome to join their events, shows and field trips which you can find through the link above. Your fees also go to insurance coverage for participation in club meetings, field trips and events.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me, membership@vlms.ca

Changes to the Board of Directors

For a variety of reasons a number of people on the board of directors have stepped down from their positions over the last month. On Tuesday the Board of Directors held an extraordinary meeting to fill vacant positions. From our club bylaws:

A quorum for a meeting of the BOD shall be five.

Vacancies – The BOD may appoint a regular or honorary member to fill a vacancy (however caused) on the BOD and that director may serve until the next annual general meeting.

The board has made the following appointments which will stand until the general membership is able to meet at an annual general meeting to elect the board for 2022 (hopefully in January).

  • President – John Andersen (president@vlms.ca)
  • VIce President – Yvan Gagnon (vicepresident@vlms.ca)
  • Member at Large – Susannah Andersen (susannah.andersen@vlms.ca)
  • Workshop Manager – Doug McLeod (lapidaryworkshop@vlms.ca)

Gary Brooke, our long-standing Laphound News editor would like to pass on the torch. He has agreed to continue in the position until the AGM, but if you have the time and interest in taking on this valued job, please email the board at bod-elected-appointed-2020@vlms.ca

We are also looking for a Junior Island Zone Rep to work with David Jackson and Sarah Hamilton on co-ordinating with other clubs on the island. (The Island Zone positions rotate in March, not January). If you are interested in learning more please email the board at bod-elected-appointed-2020@vlms.ca

January updates

March Show

It is unlikely the March Rock and Gem show at the Da Vinci centre will go ahead in 2021. We may look at re-scheduling it later in the year, but that will depend on many factors – check back here for updates.

The BCLS has rolled 2020 memberships over into 2021 for no charge and the VLMS will do the same. New VLMS membership cards have been snail-mailed on Jan 6th; if you don’t receive yours within a couple of weeks, please email membership@vlms.ca.

The membership list has been submitted to the BCLS and when those membership cards are received they will also be snail-mailed out to members. Those who have requested and paid for a hard copy of the members’ directory will receive them at the same time.

At this time we still do not have access to the workshop at Silver Threads

Field trips

At this time (due to both Covid and weather) we are not running field trips.

The 2021 calendar can be previewed here. I have two unsold copies, available for $25 each, please email web@vlms.ca if you would like to purchase them.

AGM, Board of Directors and Appointed Positions

It had been decided to continue with the same Board of Directors and appointed positions as 2020, until we can safely organize an in-person AGM for the club membership to vote on positions.

Important notice re: 2021 membership

The BC lapidary society, our parent body, have been in touch with some good news:

“Due to Covid 19. to help the clubs, the Executive of the BC Lapidary Society has unanimously agreed to waive all dues to the BCLS and the GMFC (Gem and Mineral Federation of Canada) for the 2021 Calendar year. The BCLS will pay the GMFC dues on each club’s behalf, as long as we get the required information to do so”

In a nut-shell, your membership for this year will be rolled over to next year at no extra charge.

You do need to fill in this form by December 31st (do it now!)

Roll-over Membership to 2021 (This form is for existing members of 2020 only.)

For new members please use the new members form: Victoria Lapidary and Mineral Society Membership Application

We don’t yet know when we’ll be allowed to start up the workshop or our monthly Monday members’ meetings, but as soon as we know, we will post updates here as well as emailing the members’ mailing list.
